What is a Dental Sealant? Dental sealants are thin plastic
coatings applied over the crowns of permanent molars. Their purpose is to seal out particles of food that
may get caught in the pits and grooves of the crown of the tooth. The sealant decreases the likelihood
of decay. The application of dental sealants is a simple and painless procedure. A dentist/dental
hygienist examines the teeth to ensure that decay is not present, he/she cleans and polishes the healthy teeth that will be
receiving sealants, a white liquid coating (which dries almost immediately) is applied to the crown. No
sedative or anesthesia is needed. The sealant can protect your child’s teeth for several years.

Along with having their teeth sealed the students receive a
"goody bag" containing a toothbrush, paste, floss, timer, and other dental prizes.
The SAGMO Sealant Program started
as a grant program with funding from the Missouri Foundation for Health. After funding ended in 2010, the Washington
County Health Department teamed up with the Smiley Faces team at the Washington County Community Partnership to continue these
preventative services throughout the community.
